Retirement speech
A farewell speech that says more than “thanks for everything”
When a colleague retires after 30 years or someone leaves the team, a card and a bunch of flowers aren't quite enough. A good retirement or leaving speech shows what this person achieved, tells the story everyone in the office knows and says thank you in concrete terms.
RedeStudio helps you gather the material, including from others in the team, and turns it into a draft that suits you and the occasion. Whether you're speaking as their manager, as a colleague or saying goodbye yourself.

How RedeStudio helps
- Guided questions about their career, achievements, way of working and stories, turning a look back into a speech.
- Anything that shouldn't come up, such as a restructuring or a conflict, you note once. The speech leaves it out.
- A first draft written by AI from your input, in your tone, whether heartfelt, humorous or formal. You adjust it and export it as a Word file or PDF.
How to structure a retirement or farewell speech
Welcome and occasion
Welcome everyone, name the occasion and say in what capacity you're speaking.
Looking back
A few milestones and achievements from your time together, specific rather than complete. Years help; jargon doesn't.
The person and their ways
How they worked, what was typical of them and who they are outside work, as far as they're happy to share.
A story
A story from everyday work that everyone can laugh at, the person themselves included.
Thanks
Specific thanks, personally, on behalf of the team or on behalf of the company.
Wishes and farewell
Good wishes for the next chapter and a warm goodbye, perhaps with a gift or a glass in hand.
Five tips for your speech
Gather stories from the team
Ask three or four colleagues for their favourite story. That way the speech becomes everyone's goodbye, not just yours.
Be specific when you say thanks
“Thanks for everything” says little. “Thank you for taking every new apprentice out to lunch in their first week” stays with people.
Explain in-jokes or drop them
Partners and family often come to leaving dos. Abbreviations and insider references need half a sentence of explanation.
Take the moment seriously
Retirement is a new chapter of life. Affectionate lines about gardening and alarm clocks are welcome; stock pension jokes are not.
Honour difficult departures
If someone isn't leaving entirely by choice, talk about the time you shared and what they achieved, not about the circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a retirement speech be?
Three to five minutes suits most farewells, roughly 400 to 600 spoken words. For a big retirement after decades with the company, eight to ten minutes is fine.
What do you say in a farewell speech for a colleague?
What they achieved, how they worked and what the team will miss, ideally with a concrete example. Add a story from everyday work, sincere thanks and good wishes for what comes next.
How do I give my own leaving speech?
Focus on thanks rather than a list of your achievements: say what you learned from your colleagues, recall two or three shared moments and wish the team well. In RedeStudio, choose the role “I'm the one leaving”.
What if the departure isn't voluntary?
Then the speech belongs to the time you shared, not to the reasons. Honour the work and the person and leave the circumstances out. Put sensitive topics under “Please avoid” in RedeStudio so they are left out.
Gather the stories before the farewell
A few questions, a few memories from the team, and you have the material for a good speech. You don't need an account to begin.
